It’s the night before the inauguration while tomorrow also brings Martin Luther King Day. A national holiday. The irony is not lost on me.

Two months back, I flew across the country on the same day as the Election. My morning started in New York and by evening, I’m in LA. On my way to the airport, my ride takes me past line after line of citizens in Manhattan and Brooklyn, standing outside community centers and schools, as well as gyms and churches. They’re all waiting to vote in what they trust are fair and free elections.

Once at the gate, I stand in line behind passengers donning wide-brimmed hats, USC sweatshirts and fleece outerwear, which tells me there are mostly Californians waiting to board. I suppose New Yorkers would rather stay local on election night.

Throughout the flight, we’re without Wi-Fi and therefore without access to the news. The first polling stations on the East Coast will close by the time we land, so we’ll miss any early results from swing states that might…
